Retail packaging should allure, persuade, inform and protect a product. It's not just about attractive aesthetics but effective packaging must clearly convey essential product information to allow the consumer to make a purchase and make it stand out from its competitors.

There are many factors to consider at every stage of the packaging lifecycle, from understanding distribution implications through to production, design, retailing and disposal.

Graphics – Packaging graphics have more to do than simply an attractive design, in some cases they will have less than 3 seconds to grab the attention of the consumer, so they must work hard to battle against other products / in store graphics and attract a potential buyer.

Shape – Even for the same product, packaging can come in varying shapes and sizes. The actual structure of the packaging can help to sell the product and make it stand out from competitors. The structure is also important in regards to the life of the product and making sure it is well protected and held for the life of the goods.

Sustainability – An issue which has been brought to the forefront of packaging design more and more recently. Are we able to reduce materials and maximise sustainability for environmental reasons while keeping within budget and maximising packaging attractiveness to the customer? This is one question we are constantly looking at in regards to our packaging design.

Materials – There are certain materials we associate with certain products – the tin can of cola, the egg box... But as technologies develop, and consumers attitudes change these traditional materials are being questioned and boundaries pushed to package products in a more sustainable way.

Regulations – Dependant on the product and the market, there are many different forms of legislation which needs to be taken into account.
